In terms of emotionally unstable characters, I guess Chrona from Soul Eater could count but then again, we got the background for said character a while ago, so their insanity is... Acceptable.

IIRC, those guys over on Maximum7 fell for a fake C&D letter from Tokyopop, alleged they licensed it, and dropped it 'round chapter 17. Two years later it's Darkhorse who ends up with the real license.
