Rules for prospective participants:

  • Create a song with these samples. duh ;)
  • Sample alteration is permitted as long as the samples remain recognizable.
  • Submitted songs must be smaller than 2 MB (221 bytes) or the size of the samplepack, whichever is larger.
  • Send your song to storlek at rigelseven.com when you're done with it.
  • Entries must be submitted before Saturday, 30 June 2007, 12:00 UTC.
  • Votepack and further rules will be posted at the compo deadline.

Essentially these rules are about the same as the old Groovy Compo rules, the main difference being no external samples. (IMO it's too easy to abuse that rule.)

I suggest submitting your song at least a couple hours in advance to avoid missing the deadline because of some stupid e-mail delay or something. Keep in mind, there's no penalty for submitting a song two hours after the samples are posted! ;)

>Sample alteration is permitted as long as the samples remain recognizable.

Are there limits on how samples are edited? Can we use external wave editors? Can we use the write pattern to sample feature? etc.

Anything's fine, as long as you don't mangle it so much that nobody can tell where it came from.

I'm intrested in leaving a good example. I'm not intrested in taking any rewards... sorry. I'll show you my groovy track, though, once it's finished.

Here's the vote pack, all seven megs of it. (unless the upload dies for some reason :)

Voting rules:

  • Listen to all the songs the whole way through.
  • Sort the entries in order of best to worst. Try to take into consideration both the composition (e.g. sounds nice, good chord progression, etc.) and the song's technical merits as tracker music (e.g. something interesting done with the samples? clever effect usage that you haven't seen before?). Of course, don't vote for your own song.
  • Submit your votes by e-mail before Saturday, 7 July 2007, 12:00 UTC. If you're using a different e-mail address, please identify yourself somehow.
  • You've gotta be in it to win it!

My song wasn't included. I emailed aproximately 7:00 UTC from extrernal mail. Was it receveided at least?
Here it is again in case somebody is interested.

3721 Name: Eino : 2007-06-30 10:58 [Del]

Whoops. I just realized I had deleted some of the given samples, since I didn't use them. I guess that's the reason my song wasn't included. My mistake.

I never received your song. Did you send it to the e-mail address above? (Note that the votepack was posted about 50 minutes after the deadline — 12:00 UTC is 8 AM server time.)

There's no rule against deleting samples; in fact I'm sure that would be appreciated since it decreases the size of the votepack :)

3723 Name: +- : 2007-06-30 17:51 [Del]

Wow mml, that track is.. well, I'm at a loss for words ;) Can't wait until I can play it with some decent headphones.

Do we include Eino's track in the voting, or no?

As it was said: "I'm intrested in leaving a good example. I'm not intrested in taking any rewards". It was left a bit short since I heard about this event just a few days ago and hadn't much time to work this through, sorry about it. Thanks for the interest and keeping things rolling.

I'm pretty sure you promised a free copy of the registered version of schism tracker to whoever wins, didn't you?

3727 Name: Eino : 2007-07-01 06:00 [Del]

Sure I can vote.

I was referring in my previous quote (as I thought the original line implemented) that the reward is winning (being able to prag about it).

Schism is GNU powered as it should be. "This program is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but without any warranty".

So we all are already winners.

Great track, why the ugh? It's too short for such an intro, and the panning seems a bit heavy to the right (or my left ear is clogged, possibly). But it's got a lot going for it.

Here's the (surprisingly close?) outcome:

  • +- - 1st place
  • tct1501 - 2nd
  • Eino - 3rd
  • G-Funky - 4th
  • mml and KungFuFurby - disqualified (no votes submitted)

> too heavy to the right

Probably. I was sitting too close to my left speaker when I did the panning, and didn't bother listening with headphones to check it.
Mostly I don't like it because I couldn't come up with anything "interesting" that worked together. It's just a mishmash of unorganized ideas.

3749 Name: +- : 2007-07-07 15:57 [Del]

Victoly!

Actually I totally think tct1501's entry was better than mine, I really really liked that track. It was all spacey and atmospheric.

The other tracks were very good too, but there seemed to be large amount of "here's a whole bunch of intricate, condensed details" and not quite enough "here is a song".

saged to keep the new compo on top!

3750 Name: Eino : 2007-07-07 18:05 [Del]

My thanks to everyone as well. Maybe next time there will be more people to participate.

I also voted tct's entry as first as it was clearly better. -+'s entry I voted for second.

I'm always greatful for honest feedback so I'll try to give some too for gold and silver medalists as a reward. :)

Throwing bones i/t wind..

What I found particularly interesting was what had been done to the samples and how they were used to make the most out of them. All the ping pong loops and detailed panning system got out some nicely executed sounds. There was noticably some small unfinished details, but I don't see that as a big issue.

I still think it's way too repetative and straightforward for me to enjoy. Honestly I think it would had been a lot better if it would had been half it's length. It lacks power grib because perhaps it's missing someting, a clear melodic lead or three? Maybe it's just too careful?

I miss the Internet

This song had some nice things going for a while. All the instruments work out nicely together, even though there really comes out no progression to any one of them. What I think is the most important thing in composing is to create different relations among the used instruments and not just to loop some pieces together here and other pieces there. Maybe a lenghtier attempt with one of the instruments would had been in place. After that maybe trying to see if u can make those other instruments to progress as well to that extended "solo" or whatever. Practicing makes it possible. There are some details that aren't turned on for whole length of the song, but still repeat themselves many more times than necessary. Everything else loops very badly (main melody, strings, other chords etc.) Some minor fills on the drums can't correct this. While considering how to vote, I didn't consider sample edition as a merit or as a penalty. Pannings are adjusted nicely. If I try to jump patterns, I see that most of them begin almost exactly the same way!

The above comment applys for the most part for G-funkys song too.

Afterwords for my song

Sorry it was left way too short. I really didn't use more than two days for it. My initial idea was to fit those strings better in some final climax and to make progression to them in the beginning of the song as well, but I sadly run out of time. Maybe I should had keep going for it as I had it going. There are some flaws not intended, but not very serious I think. What I was happily surpriced that how well I could make that breakbeat fit to the other elements even though I sliced it almost as hard as I could with exessive offsets. In that 3 / 4 part and near it I think it works better than I could had hoped. It's intentionally minimalistic what comes to samples and tracks used to keep the focus on whats happening. Concidering that, I can't think there could be more details involved than the minimum possible. I'm glad there were not many handicapped parts left in I should cry for afterwards. The strings were maybe the worst and most separate part as they didn't come out as I intended.

Sorry for +-, those symbols got themselves wrong way around. That was unintentional.

3752 Name: Eino : 2007-07-07 18:20 [Del]

What I found most disturbing was that tct looped sample nro. 10 with almost same parameters as it was in my track!

3753 Name: tct1501 : 2007-07-07 22:36 [Del]

First of all, congrats plusminus! It was a cool track.

I'm OK with that, but hey, I only wanted to put in a good song. Did anyone get suprised about my song, despite a disqualification?

3773 Name: +- : 2007-07-11 19:40 [Del]

>>3771

To be honest, I really couldn't get into it.

There's a bunch of interesting stuff going on, both technically and sonically. But it felt to me like there was no cohesion whatsoever. The whole feel of the track changes from one moment to the next, and it doesn't really build to anything. As a result it's almost completely immemorable.

I'm not trying to put you down, so please don't take it that way; there are a bunch of nice moments in there. But I think you were trying to put too many ideas and too many details into it without looking at the bigger picture.

>>3750
All your criticisms are spot-on. I do like repetitive music to an extent, but there was way too much copy-and-pasting going on.

I'll give you some feedback on your track (and the others, I've been meaning to) but right now I have to go out for a bike ride before it gets dark!

Hey everyone, even though my song "Compost" was voted 4th out of 4, I had some bigger plans for it. Check out the club song I made out of it with some vocals etc.

I don't know about you guys, but way back when the demo scene (Kosmic, etc) was around, that's when I got into Impulse Tracker, but as I grew through that and purchased better equipment, Impulse Tracker (and now - Schism Tracker) became my drum machine, the best drum machine really, for programming beats and drums for real songs. That's still what I mainly use it for, and even though there's more advanced programs now (Garageband etc) that can apply effects right in the program, they don't offer the minute details that Schism Tracker offers for complex patterns. Anyway, share your stories! And check out this song!

Infectious grooves. The singing is a welcome addition to the original, but the first 14 seconds of the songs, the speech reminds me of when I was a kid standing at the bumper carts at a carnival.

Here and there I seemed to hear a Jxx effect in the beginning of patterns with speech. Would be better without.

Nice end product, though it isnt my cup of tea.

I thought your track was really good, I just thought most of the other entries were a little bit better ;)
The problem when so few people enter is that even great songs get last place sometimes. Ah well.
I'll check your song out when I get back to my own computer, I'm on vacation right now.

That was really good. I totally agree with >>3803 - Jxx (or whatever it is) on vocals is unnecessary, and the style overall isn't really my favourite. But it's very interesting what some mastering and a bunch of vocal tracks can do to a song. Good job.
