ah. forgot if I could reference a post outside the thread or not.

let me know what you think of the sample pack. Hopefully it doesn't drive anyone crazy..

3820 Name: KungFuFurby : 2007-07-22 15:51 [Del]

I [attempted to] make good use out of your sample pack. The idea for me is to not modify any samples (execpt for perhaps adding loop points) and use them as is.

I'm intrested in making a sample pack for the next competition containing 20 or so samples, and then letting people put in one of their own samples, any type execpt for any spoken words.

If anyone wants their sample in the pack that I plan on making, they can send me theirs (with a notification on which sample to put in), and I'll put it in, complete with credits on the bottom of the insturment list to the people that contributed.

If I do the sample pack and put in other's, then I'll post the sample pack. I'm not the person to take the entries, though. I'll leave that to Storlek.

3822 Name: +- : 2007-07-27 11:49 [Del]

How are those tracks coming, guys and gals?

>>3820

I might suggest, if you're allowing an added sample, a few more rules. Such as: limit the filesize of the sample to something reasonable (it's up to you to decide what's reasonable though); no obvious combining of multiple sounds into a single sample; don't base your song around the added sample, etc.

This last one is very hard to quantify, so if you decide to use it you'd really have to make a judgement call. But I remember when I used this rule in a compo awhile ago I was disappointed that a few songs seemed to make really heavy use of their added samples.

I like the idea, but like Storlek said, this is a rule that's easy to abuse.

Hey, either host it or don't.

3825 Name: +- : 2007-07-28 11:28 [Del]

Perhaps I should've included a time with the deadline. :P

Oh well, entries accepted all day today. Currently the votepack is 2 songs (KungFuFurby and tct1501), which isn't really enough.

>>3825

All day!? Then perhaps I could;ve worked on it for a better song, the current is ermm.. :) Not my best

Anyway, seems this weeks compo is heading for a failure. That would suck.

3827 Name: +- : 2007-07-28 13:08 [Del]

If you really want, you can send me another track... but look at it this way, right now you're tied for 1st place! ;)

3828 Name: tct1501 : 2007-07-28 15:29 [Del]

Havent got another track, though your samples simply rocked: one can make an endless variety of songs on that :)

You got any other entries yet?

3829 Name: Addison McFarland : 2007-07-28 21:52 [Del]

Nope; nothing. I guess I'll wait until I get up tomorrow (which could be any time, but probably at least 12 hours from now. Not that I'm going to sleep now :P ) and if nothing by then, call it a bust.

>Havent got another track, though your samples simply rocked

Thanks a lot :) Unfortunately it seems other people didn't think so...

3831 Name: Storlek !UUKVbBBwvY : 2007-07-28 23:22 [Del]

Crap, today was the deadline, wasn't it.

Cramming a 40-hour schedule into three days isn't good for productivity outside of work. I have a kickass intro that doesn't go anywhere.... work sux.

3832 Name: +- : 2007-07-28 23:30 [Del]

Ouch.. well, if people are actually interested I'm not against extending the deadline a few days. I just don't want to keep saying "one more day" over and over again if nothing will come of it.

3833 Name: KungFuFurby : 2007-07-29 08:12 [Del]

I've got a real good tune up my sleeves! Go check it out for yourself (once the vote pack comes in)!

3834 Name: +- : 2007-07-29 14:10 [Del]

Well, still nothing. So I guess that's it. :P
Sorry to KFF and tct. I'll post their tracks, and some feedback from myself, in a bit. Or they can post them themselves. I thought both were excellent.

Was the pack too hard, or were people too busy? Or is it just that no one is interested?

OK, I'll post the tune myself. Check it out!

And here's tct1501's track. Both great tracks, so 1st place for everybody! ;)

Comments for both (from memory, sorry):

KungFuFurby: I find your style in general to be quite strange, but I don't mean this in a bad way. I think this track works really well, it covers quite a lot of ground, but unlike your first /sc compo entry that I said I didn't like so much, this one sounds really cohesive. All the elements seem to work with one another well throughout the 11+ minutes (!!) and it comes off as almost a remix-kind-of-thing between several related ideas.

There are some times when I feel your volume levels are very unbalanced. I'm not sure whether this is intentional or not; sometimes it sounds one way or the other. Channels that get tripled or quadrupled up often (but not always!) sound overly loud, and that part where you've got a large amount of channels playing the Artifact sound is really crackly.

I found lowering the mixing volume made the song much more enjoyable, so there's not nearly as much clipping, but I'm curious to know how much of this was meant for effect, and also what kind of stereo equipment you use for mixing. But despite the volume issues I think you put together an excellent track.

tct1501: More distortion, but of a completely different sort. I like that you not only overdrived many of the sounds, including the already harsh Corekick sound that you base the track on, but that you really go for the gusto and max out the mixing volume.

Careful examination of the track would reveal that it was probably put together in a hurry (if I didn't know already from your email). But it's so fast-paced, in-your-face, and full of bass that it's a bit hard to notice. You also manage to get some really interesting sounds out of those samples, particularily the Beep + Hpsweep combo. And at 2:35 it leaves you wanting more instead of overextending it's welcome. A fun angry sugar-rush of a song.

Posting the sample pack here for posterity.

So, when's the next one start?

3844 Name: Joesph Underwood : 2007-07-31 01:29 [Del]

August 4, maybe, to continue with the every-two-weeks thing?

3846 Name: +- : 2007-07-31 02:16 [Del]

Well that would make sense, wouldn't it..

3847 Name: KungFuFurby : 2007-07-31 09:57 [Del]

Woo hoo! Let's do it again with another sample pack!

You going to host? I'm interested in what a KFF samplepack would be like.

3853 Name: tct1501 : 2007-08-03 05:20 [Del]

So, who is hosting tomorrow?

3854 Name: KungFuFurby : 2007-08-03 13:44 [Del]

I'll use my sample pack that I made. Besides, I got the sample pack. Thanks for the reminder!

Warning: Sample Pack is 3.7 MB! I'd suggest not making the song over 4 MB.

Note: I'm going to upload the sample pack one day early becauses I probally won't be present on Saturday for the day. I'm a little forgetful!

Entries: Send 'em to KungFuFurby at gmail dot com!

Vote pack comes out August 11, 2007.

Bumping a month-old thread with a song I did just now. If only I had more of a chance to work on the song during the compo week...

didn't bother removing unused samples, bleh

>If only I had more of a chance to work on the song during the compo week...

Yeah really! That was pretty cool. Felt a bit repetitive on first listen (I'm one to talk..) but I might be missing details since I've got some terrible speakers right now. Very nice use of the Feedback sample as a lead though. Crosspost to /m/!

> Very nice use of the Feedback sample as a lead though.

That was a huge pain to write; I had to keep switching the note at exactly the right time to keep the pitch right. Try changing the tempo by 1 bpm — it entirely destroys the song.

I also liked it very much! Nice programming of drums. Initially, I played your song, but i had to switch jacks of stereo to headphone. Once i done that, your song was blasting out of my headphones (i didnt have it on my head) That sounded really awesome and industrial

>>3933
The only thing that makes it a bit repetetive at first is the use of fatbass sample.

Storlek, you could try a filtersweep on this one which gets stronger gradually through the song. I tried it to hear, but it really fits the sound of the module. But thats only a suggestion.

Yeah I could tell that a lot of effort went into that even on first listen. Which is part of what makes it great.
An interesting thing about this sample pack is that pretty much all the samples came straight from other songs of mine. So I know what it's like to work with them and it's interesting to hear how they got used in other ways.
I did start a tune with this pack as well, but I really wasn't at my computer much for those 2 weeks. Maybe I'll finish it for next month ;)

BTW surround bit doesn't get reset after pattern 15 on channel 6. Don't know if this is a schism bug and/or a song bug...

also, nice extra patterns :D

Oops! There was panning set in the next pattern. Apparently I accidentally cut it when I removed the rest of the drums. :/
