Sample Pack is one day early because I probally won't be present here tomorrow.
The sample pack is 3.7 MB, so the songs shouldn't be bigger than 4 MB. I purouplsey doubled the size limit due to the fact my sample pack is larger than 2 MB.
Send your entries for this week to: KungFuFurby at gmail dot com.
Enjoy the sample pack!
What, no picture? :)
Good pack, though a few of the samples could be trimmed significantly without losing much. 400kb for a hihat...
It's an odd blend of styles — results will surely be interesting!
>What, no picture? :)
Yeah, really! Here's one for you.
I didn't include a picture since I was in a little bit of a rush last time.
Thanks for the image, Rhiannon Y. Moreno!
I plan on doing a second sample pack for 18-25 August 2007 compo. It'll contain different samples than the other one.
(Man! What's with this thing? It's misreconized my screename. This is KungFuFurby, not Jeremy Weeks.)
(This is KungFuFurby)
Could someone correct this screename problem, please?
>>3870
Anonymity is not a problem. It's a board feature. (and "screen names"? this isn't AIM)
One question for you: what value does the knowledge that you are KungFuFurby add to the content of your post?
Here's my piece. Hope you enjoy...YOUR DOOM, THAT IS! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAAAAAAAAA
Just to give them a note. who I am when there's a darn screename problem.
(If KungFuFurby is under this post, the problems looks like it's solved!)
Well, I only have two entries at the moment, and it's almost Saturday.
The time I'll post the vote pack will not excatally be at a specific time, but I'm going to make sure to post the pack on Saturday. One more entry is needed, though, before I can do the vote pack, otherwise, I'm going to go ahead and extend this for another week, just in case people are suffering from time constraints.
>>3877
A week should be ample time for submitting tracks. However, submitting votes also takes a week. Maybe we should change this to 2 or 3 days in order to be able to work longer at the compo track while still maintaining the monthly two compo's.
One week for me isnt enough. I like to work on tracks that dont involve compo's as well.
Or, we should ask ourselves whether or not there is enough demand for such things. If not, we should stop. I wouldnt like that though.
btw: Who submitted a track beside Magiao? (or sth like that)
> Maybe we should change [voting] to 2 or 3 days
Well, the trouble is if you decrease the voting time then it doesn't line up on a two-week schedule anymore.
Perhaps if we shifted the compo dates so that the transition days didn't fall on a weekend, then anyone who hasn't much time would have a full two day block that could be dedicated to writing the compo song?
Count me in on this one, although my entry probably sucks. (I haven't listened to it — seriously!)
I usually have trouble getting into songs lately. I need to get immersed in what I'm doing before I can come up with anything truly creative. Unfortunately, living in shared housing makes that next to impossible, since even when the spare time is available, there's always some other stuff going on in the background, and I can't get absorbed into what I'm doing. Sucks not having my own place. :/
> Sexy beautiful Compotunes?
That'd be /sbc/, now wouldn't it?
>>3878
That's a very strange angle. Is she standing under a four-foot ceiling or something?
btw, new tripcode ~desu
See, this is why I like 3 hour compos better. With a week you have time to potentially make a proper song, and most people want to realize that potential, even though few actually do.
But with three hours you're just like "hell, gotta make something" and you go with what you can. Fewer masterpieces this way, but things usually still turn out alright and you're not making a big time commitment in your week.
Of course, no one showed up for the 3HCs, so obviously this weekly thing has advantages too...
>> Sexy beautiful Compotunes?
> That'd be /sbc/, now wouldn't it?
pfft, then what's /sc/? Schism Crackers?
>>3880 >shift the compo dates so that the transition days dont fall on a weekend
Good idea. Perhaps this compo lends itself for the opportunity to shift it to a weekday. Atm im also working on a module, but i wont finish it today.
Sunday = Last day then?
-—
/sc/ is scary module in the case of my tune. One pattern scares the hell out of me.
OK, it's Saturday! Again, e-mail your votes to KungFuFurby at gmail dot com.
For Rufus Cain: Go ahead and put your song on here tomorrow.
If we're rearranging the schedule, I think it'd make more sense to go the other way, so people can download the sample pack on Friday, get the weekend to put together most of a song, and then tweak it for the rest of the week.
At least, I personally would appreciate that since the way my schedule works out I'd have more off-days when the sample pack comes out than when the vote pack does — but personal reasons aside, I'd support Fridays anyway.
Pros/cons?
>>3890
Makes sense. Personally the days don't matter to me, I just think (as I've stated before) that it doesn't take a week to vote on a few songs, and we would be better to allot more time to composing.
I didnt finish my song. It took too long. The intro is posted.
____
As for shifting dates: I dont mind either which day it will be. And for those 3 hours compo, maybe we must try again(?). There is now a somewhat solid base of compo trackers here at Soviet Russia.
Hey magaio — do you by any chance play Guitar Hero?
No I've never played those types of games, why?
It reminded me of >>>/m/293, mashed up a little with Bach's Toccata & Fugue in D Minor.
>>3900
Yea I'd agree. I was thinking of a Final Fantasy fight theme (can't remember which one it's from) and another game...I wanna say Star Ocean? ... that Chick Corea hammered organ acid jazz crap. Honestly I still had know idea what I was doing procedurally (remember: "Guhh how do I do instruments raahadrerrrrr?"). I learned a lot from the entries; finally understand how to use arp and filtering well. I come from MIDI/MML so this is my first real attempt on a tracker. I think my next entry will be much more robust. Thanks to all and look forward to next time!
Are we going to get results today/start the next one tomorrow? Has anyone not voted?
>>3920
I havent voted. Shall do it right away for i forget
I won't post the results yet... I'll wait until either Friday or Saturday, in case anyone else wants to vote.
Next Sample Pack, per request of Storlek, comes out Friday.
Hey, Magaio, you still need to vote! (Is that right that Magaio still needs to vote?)
>>3926
Sorry, vote cast. I didn't think contestants were supposed to vote. As a token of my apology, please accept this image of a muffin having crushed a car.
Where is them votes?
We're all done! And the winner is...
First: Magaio (Ultimate Sacrifice), with 100%!
Tied for Second: +- (justadrum) and Rufus Cain (unfinished song), both with 66 and 2/3 percent, which would be 66.66666...%.
Last (Nice try!): Storlek (allstope), with 41 and 2/3 percernt, or 41.66666...%
Magaio, with Ultimate Sacrifice! Congratulations!
That wraps the competition.
My (short, kind of) reviews.
Magaio, your song really had something in it, while +- really utilized sample modifications.
Rufus Cain, your song actually sounded quite promising, and I think should it have been finished, it would have done a real good job.
Well, Storlek, I say that was a good attempt. Time constaints causes some of these results, but time can heal all wounds. Keep trying, and you'll get it!
That's it! See ya next compo, which has already started!
Hm, didn't realize I should've voted for tct1501' (Rufus) track. Maybe I voted before he posted it though. Anyhow it's too bad it didn't get developed further.
Storlek, I thought your song was good but I felt like the Synth Bass sample was really ugly sounding when looped.
Magaio your track was really nice. I think you should've chopped the start off of the organ sample and used a volume envelope for a shorter attack, but meh.
+-: If nobody had labeled their songs, I'd still be able to identify yours easily. Can't place my finger on what it is, but there's something about your musical style...
tct1501: I definitely want to hear the finished version of your song; it sounds promising.
Magaio: Welcome, and great first attempt! :)
KungFuFurby: Thanks for hosting, it was fun.
>If nobody had labeled their songs, I'd still be able to identify yours easily.
That's actually quite funny because I was thinking that my track was fairly unlike things I usually do. I guess I'm wrong!
Thanks very much! I learned a lot here (e.g. how to use the damn tracker). I really enjoyed how different samples stretched my style. Looking forward to showing you all something different next week! Cheers
It seems I created some high expectations here with Rufus Cain. Geez, I hope the track can live up to that. It isnt a classical track afterwards so dont be disappointed when I post it when its done (it wont take much work anymore, in that)
I enjoyed all songs. +-'s and Storlek's entries even made me happy. Magaio's sound was too grim for that to happen (also compliment).
At first I thought the samplepack was crap, but later I changed my mind. I do would like to see some higher quality samples.
>the samplepack was crap
Paraphrase to 'i didnt like it much at first'. The word crap is a bit unseemly and oversimplified, methinks :)
-—
I hope everyone likes the song. It still needs some tweaking though. Feedback is always appreciated.
>>3955
Aha! I just figured out what the intro to this song was reminding me of. Song related.
Weird, it's like... orchestral gothy tracker-rock. Without guitars. Cool though. Not where I would've expected you to go after that intro, but it works all the same.
Just curious, did you master it at all? The bass sounds, um, bassy.
>> the samplepack was crap
> Paraphrase to 'i didnt like it much at first'.
I kind of thought that too at first, actually. Very few melodic instruments I think was my problem. So I copped out and wrote a quick ditty with just the sinewavey sample :) And then just played it a second time with some other samples.
>>3957
It came rolling out of Schism's diskwriter this way.
For the bass I changed loopmarkers, speed and filtering. Of course I mistreated the sample and let the waveform clip.
For the bassdrum eg I made the punch harder
>Not where I would've expected you to go after that intro
So what turn did you think I would make? Being curious too
I like the new term 'orchestral gothy tracker-rock without guitars'.
I decided to listen to your MP3, and man! That really is a real good tune! You really used that sample pack to the max!
