NOT the same rules as usual! You can use all the external samples you want, as long as they're at most 11khz, mono, 8 bit. Maximum size of submitted tracks is 128 kb.
In addition, you can only have one triangle, two squarewave, one noise, and one external (PCM) sample active at any given time. A recommended setup is listed in the sample text.
Good luck! :)
It isnt that simple!
>In addition, you can only have one triangle, two squarewave, one noise, and one external (PCM) sample active at any given time.
I assume this includes NNA's, but I thought I'd ask anyhow for the benefit of people who wouldn't think of that.
Also, you didn't say no filters. Which is fine by me but not really in the Nintendo spirit.
And that white noise sample sucks, BTW.
Could I use my own custom square wave/triangle wave/noise samples? I have some of my own.
Now this is something I would want to really go for! Best of all, I can still use custom pitched samples as long as I degrade them quite a bit, unless they're already 8-bit.
Discouraged, hm? Well I'll try to get on without them. At any rate I'll stop myself from making a track based solely on filter envelopes.
I might end up having to do that thing with the square wave that I did with that other song, though... um, Power Supply Blues, if you remember it. (It wasn't particularily memorable!)
By 128 kb, do you mean 131072 bytes or 128000 bytes?
Just curious :D
So yeah, I supplied neither an e-mail address nor even a name. Fortunately +- both guessed who's hosting, and pointed out that I omitted that stuff. I'll take entries through Saturday since I screwed up. :/

ahah. i'm so used to anonymous boards now it never even occurred to me that there was anything missing
I thought it was obvious Storlek was behind this compo. I never even noticed such info was missing.
Three thus far. I'll give it another few hours.
I entered in the compo myself, actually. You got another entree!
Guess it's just three. Oh well.
Here's the votepack anyway, but with such a small group voting doesn't really work.
What happened to those other dudes that took part in the 1st and 2nd compos, anyhow? I know distance pokes his head in here once in awhile...
dunno, this place is a ghost town now :P
Anyone else up for hosting the next compo?
>>4024
Certainly! If you can find some people to participate, that is...
Compo hosts should be allowed to participate.
In fact, compo hosts should be forced to participate.
The problem is it wouldn't be fair to the other participants. How do you know the host didn't grab some song they've been working on for a month, rip the samples, call that the samplepack, and then enter the song?
>>4027
You never know except the host self. And he knows that God shall pass judgement over his sin in teh afterlife.
This thread is 62% evil, so i think the host won't be honest. http://homokaasu.org/gematriculator
Aside that, and to add some more numbers: I think it is positive that in this way we can manage to screw up the average compo participants to 2.89
So is there going to be a compo? If so, I can announce it on the forum at traxinspace. Perhaps there are some people interested.
But if so, I dont know the rules about submitting module formats. Is it .it only? Or any module that can be read by Schism?
Traxinspace still exists?! Wow, cool. If you can get people to participate, sure, send 'em this way.
As for formats, I suppose any of the "standard" ones (IT/S3M/XM/MOD) would be permissible.

Furthermore, what's to stop a compo participant from taking a mostly-finished track and replacing the samples with those from the samplepack, reworking it a bit to fit the samples better, and submitting that? It's slightly more work than it would be for a compo host to cheat, but it's far from impossible.

TIS was relaunched recently. I don't really know how it compares to it's former self.
Crap, I still have to vote for this compo. Hold on, I'll get right to it...
Oh, we are voting? I just figured this one was a write-off considering there were only three entries.
Evidently, we're not voting. Mini-reviews:

Liked the overall sound. Nice use of the noise sample as a drumloop of sorts. I like the numerous lo-fi samples that get used, although the part around 1:30 or so with just the fanfare sound is a bit tacky-sounding. Because of the rhythmic qualities of the sample and the way you use it there it becomes very obviously sampley-sounding. Once the squarewaves come back in they mask the other sample and it sounds fine.
Could've developed it further and made things a little longer I think, but it works as-is.

Very nice themes going on in this track, with nice development. You do a good job of cramming things into the limited number of channels. Kudos on actually trying to use stereo too, although it's a bit too separated for headphones.

Pretty happy with what I got, although it was a bit sparse at times. Needs a better ending. Also I totally forgot to even try any sort of panning before I sent it, lol.
