MP3/OGG/FLAC support? (6)

Hi everyone!

I was just wondering if there will ever be support for MP3/OGG/FLAC files in Schism Tracker.
I think it would be really great because I have too many samples for the tiny hard disk in my laptop.

There are a couple of different plans in the works for improved sample management, such as ogg/flac support (mp3, possibly, maybe; but those stupid licensing issues make it annoying) as well as externally defined samples – so your sample data is on the disk once, and is merely referenced in each song rather than being copied.

Other stuff takes precedence though, notably the really sucky keyboard code that badly needs attention, but yes, there's plans. :)

It would also be nice if Schism could load samples from 7zip archives or something.

Right now I'm in the process of packing mine in IT modules, which is a pain in the ass as I have to use run Impulse Tracker (via DOSBox) for better compression. (If anyone has a simpler method for saving space, I'm all ears! :-)

I'm going to have to say no for 7zip, as it's entirely nonstandard and appears only to have a Windows version. (wtf?) I personally had to consult Google just to find out what it was, much less have I ever seen a 7zip file, and I suspect the same is true for many other people. Considering Schism Tracker is primarily Linux-developed and has a fairly good-sized Linux/Mac userbase, supporting a compression scheme with no coverage outside the Windows world hardly seems to be a logical choice.

On the other hand, implementing an IT sample compressor shouldn't be too hard at all. It'd essentially take some reading through the decompressor and a bit of general technical knowledge of how compression works. Might be a good rainy-day project for an aspiring developer.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Nevermind then. :-p

I'm sure there's a Linux version out there too (at least according to the Wikipedia page), but I suppose it is a rather trivial format.

Heh.
Upon further searching (and actually reading) I found Linux and MacOS command-line versions, though they don't seem to be officially supported by 7zip, nor do the 7zip developers seem to care much either way. Curious.

Nevertheless turning Schism Tracker into a general-purpose archive decompressor is a fair amount beyond its original scope. Remember, featuritis kills.
