Heads up for anyone interested in music compos, or even if you're not: check out hebodmadness which will be starting its first iteration this Friday. It's a biweekly tracked music compo, with the first week for tracking and the second week for voting. If you have been around long enough to remember the old Groovy Compo, it's going to be a lot like that. Check it out, it will be awesome.
there's no i in sven
Oh jeez. I suck. http://rigelseven.com/hmc/
Never post when very tired. I don't know when I'm going to learn this.
I participated in the old compos (not the Groovy Compo, but the ones you did before! I hosted a couple myself.), and I will return! Using my trusty old Schism Tracker, of course. ^_^
All right, first samplepack is up, along with more detailed text. I renamed it, too, but the link will stay the same for now.
Post this in other forums, let's get some participants!
I am in! I'm already working on the song, jumping right into the action. ^_^
What an interesting samplepack.
I'll see if Drone is up for it.
how's it going /sc/?
I've posted a heads up to the compo on noerror. As an old participant in the groovy compos, I will also participate.
Well, we have about a week before voting begins.
>4483
Correct; and votes for your own song don't count.
(I know how to quote posts, I swear)
I wonder how many people have entered a tune? I hope it gets enough attention, because it's almost time for the tunes to come out, and I wonder what the tunes will sound like! When I made my tune, I made sure to use all of the samples at least once.
>>4504
Five including my own. I know there's several other people who expressed interest in it as well.
I'll have something for sure, later tonight.
I think Storlek should do this again. Sounds like we got some interest. ^_^
Only a couple of hours left... ^_^
Vote pack is up! Apparantley there are 16 tunes - four of them XMs, the rest of them ITs.
Did my voting today, so I should be in the results in a week... ^_^
Results for the first round are up: http://rigelseven.com/hmc/01/
Also second sample pack is posted, hope to see some names again!
I placed 4th?! You guys have bad taste, that was not a good song at all :P
For curiosity's sake, what kind of algorithm do you use for totaling the votes?
Congrats to smh, looking forward to the next round...
Where did I place? I know I was worse than fifth.
Also, where's the second sample pack?
>>4542
It's on the main page.
> algorithm
Number votes with 1=best, etc., add all numbers for each song together. Then,
n = number of entries - 1
weight = (n + 1) * n / 2
minval = n
maxval = n * n
voterange = maxval - minval
percentage = maxval - sum(votes) / voterangeIt's done this way so that the final values won't be dependent on how many songs there wore. Probably more complicated than it needs to be.
I don't really want to put the full results up, sort of as a means of encouragement – it takes the focus off of people seeing their names down near the bottom of the list, just because they aren't as good. After all, many of the people who enter these have had several years of practice, and some are professional musicians.
Groovy Compo did something like that, but it also listed the last place entrant I suppose if you look at the results and don't see your name at all, you'd be able to think "hey, I didn't place last!", but along the same lines it's perhaps a bit disheartening if you're The Guy At The Bottom.
I dunno.
Hrm.
Apparently qualo did (attempt to) send me votes, so I might be redoing the results in a bit.
sorry +-, you got bumped off the list due to qualo's votes and replacement of wintvibe.it – by a fraction of a percent!
Updated results posted.
I wonder how close was I to the top 5...
>>4546
Ironically,
<qualo> actually i think i liked trip01_plusminus_apoplex.it the most
<qualo> should have voted it higher>>4543 =~ s/wore/were/
HEEH I TYPE LIEK RETARDED
>I don't really want to put the full results up, sort of as a means of encouragement – it takes the focus off of people seeing their names down near the bottom of the list, just because they aren't as good.
Based on what you were saying in IRC, maybe you should put this to a vote? Allow anyone who participated in either compo 1 or 2 to have a say. I mean, I agree with your line of reasoning, but also I don't really care; it sounds like maybe some people who would prefer to see all the scores would care.
You could also use the Wilson Interval to handle situations where not every song gets the same number of votes.
(Actually I just spent 5 minutes looking up the name of that thing, so I'll just leave it here so I can find it later)
> Wolfram|Alpha isn't sure what to do with your input.
Also Wikipedia's description sucks. I'll try to find a decent explanation tomorrow...
I like math, but unfortunately, skilled mathematicians who also have good communication skills are rare.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binomial_proportion_confidence_interval
contains the important bits. I can whip up a quick python implementation if you like.
Still curious on how close I was to the top 5...
To those of you that want to submit a tune for Trippy Compo 2: You have less than 5 minutes!
Votepack is up. Turns out there are 12 tunes... still a pretty good amount to me.
Turns out people thought I muted channel 11 by mistake. Far from that. I just wasn't satisfied with that part, and rushed the track out without it before the deadline, that's all.
>>4583
fwiw, I rated it higher after unmuting that channel
>>4584
Agreed, it was better with that channel unmuted. It did seem intentionally muted to me though, since it was a bit rough.
And I guess people don't like industrial rock after all. Oh well. Congrats to \ and the rest of the top 5.
Also, Storlek, has there been any response to the top-5 question?
It certainly fit with the direction I wanted to take, however in general I prefer to remove parts I've not yet polished enough than adding things in hope they stick.
>>4585
yeah, haven't gotten to sorting that stuff out yet though
ok, so regarding the added sample rule:
(1) Are stereo samples allowed?
If yes,
(2) could I add two mono samples with L/R panning that are treated as one stereo sample, for IT compatibility? (Is anyone participating using classic IT these days anyhow?) I could fake it with Oxx I guess, if I have to...
>>4588
I suppose, yes. I can't find any player that seems to completely die or do something nonsensical upon encountering a stereo sample, but Impulse Tracker, DUMB, Mikmod/Mikit, OpenCP, and XMP only play the left channel with center panning. Not a huge deal unless you're doing some weird stuff with it; just keep that in mind, I guess.
As for loading two samples, well then that's more than one sample, isn't it! ;)
> Is anyone participating using classic IT these days anyhow?
Based on heuristics, breakdown by tracker of trippy01 entries is:
For trippy02, it's:
... mad confirmed that yes, that was written with IT.
>>4589
Alright, stereo sample with message-text warning it is.
Thanks.
Looks like I ranked out again. I'll be back... had a bit of a late start because I was absent Friday through Sunday night (Eastern Time).
Looked up the page and... that's very interesting. My tune was the least consistently ranked! Well, I'm sure that meant I got mixed reception.
I think the biggest problem with your entries is that, in compos, people are impatient, and long songs – even good ones – get boring quickly. I have the same problem with my entries sometimes, I'm making an effort to keep the next one short though.
I'd be really interested to see what you came up with if you set yourself a limit of 5 minutes max, and put the same amount of effort into it that you would in a song twice that length. Up to you, of course.
>>4606
I know it's an older one, but: "Walls" is a fantastic soundscape, 10:30 duration or not.
Then again, I also can put on Godspeed! You Black Emperor - Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven, and play the entire thing without getting bored of it.
>>4608
lol, thanks.
I don't think long songs are bad in general, nor do I plan to stop making them. It's just that for compos, when you have to listen to 10+ songs at least once (for most people at least twice, I imagine) to rank them in some kind of order, anything more than 5 minutes that isn't really good can turn into a chore.
A good song is not always a good compo entry!
Already submitted a song on Sunday (and whoops, I didn't look at these posts...), though for Trippy Compo number 4, I'd be glad to make something about 5 minutes or less. ^_^
>>4589
Haha, ended up not using any added samples. Ah well.
I decided to use a bonus sample in all three cases. ^_^ Well, it's a good thing I used mono samples instead of stereo samples.
The furby is on stand by for the vote pack. It is not up yet...
>>4621
Up now. I don't see your track Furby, unless you used a different name...
Thankfully I was on IRC when this occured, and I used my same name. I did notice plusminus was +- in this case.
I voted right off the bat as usual, so I am well prepared.
plusminus is plumsinus is +- is some other goofy names too
I voted really early the last time but I think some tracks grew on me, gradually, so I purposely left it until late this week.
Oh, Storlek: for the comments I have been rearranging the order of the tracks to match my best/worst voting (for my own sake) but it just occurred to me that maybe this makes more work for you, should I rearrange them back in the future or do you even care?
>>4637
Doesn't matter, I sort them all out again with UNIX MAGIC anyway.
Completetly forgot to ask on IRC – what are the rules regarding co-op entries? Should I hypothetically want to do one sometime.
Hey, I'm well ahead of schedule as far as submitting my tune goes. I made sure to keep it short (well, at least under 5 minutes).
>>4643
You can only vote once; and at least one of the people submitting the co-op needs to vote. (Both, if you're also doing individual entries.)
Not going to finish in time for this one :(
GL to everyone else.
same here :/
... looks like it's gonna be for next bi-week =)
As usual, I was lightning-fast with production, so I got my tune in. I'm also done with voting.
Apparantley there were six entries... half the number than what I usually see. Oh well, that's OK. ^_^
Well, it's Trippy Compo 5 and I'm going to finally utilize filters. I've done it before, just not for the Trippy Compo.
i entered something for the first time.
Interested to see how I go..
It's not very "sceney", if you catch my drift..
I'm going to enter a track still but it might be right down to the deadline. I had planned to finish it last night but there was a pretty bad storm here and I had no power for awhile, and now I have to go write my last exam, so I'll have to fix it up when I'm back...
just thought i'd add the proper version of New_Boots_Old_Phone.it from the comp.
Only because I sent to wrong version..
I guess you should make your votes based on the one in the vote pack, to be fair...
But here it is anyway... not that it's much different.. just a tiny bit less repetitious.. :)
Don't mind me, I finished my tune on Monday, well before the Friday deadline. I also recently did my voting.
Hooray for the return of the compo image! :D
downloads trippy pack #6
:0
jesus...
Well.. That's that song done..
puts feet up
Got a question. Can you make a copy of the bonus sample and modify it, provided you explain what you did to modify the sample?
Hmm.
I suppose, as long as it's derived from the same data.
And open letter to KungFuFurby.
"Can we have a sonmg that's under 50 minutes, this time, please."
:P
Er... I haven't made a 50-minute song yet. However, I see what you're trying to say.
lol.
he's already made short music :)
Yup. Did it once for the fourth Trippy Compo.
I'm not trying to stifle your creativity, here.. :)
Whoops, small mistake in my track for TC06. Not that it matters for this crap :P but the right drum echo is filtered out.
Nice new website!
Also LOL sample pack. Not as bad as your all cymbals idea from way back at least ;)
Fantastic new sample pack!
I was just thinking yesterday that an orchestral sample pack would be a great challenge.
This is even better.
Oh yeah... I hate you.
:)
Nice challenge with the piano sample pack! I finished the tune within a few hours of release, though, as I was quickly able to come up with a tune. For my bonus sample, I used a drumbeat sample.
that's just what i was working on :)
I have to say I much prefer this business of having the weekend at the end of the song-writing week than the beginning. It takes my brain a few days to come up with anything good at all, once I get a feel for the samples then I start making my tune. (Even when they're just piano! :P) So this way I still get some proper time to compose once the ideas have started to form.
I was thinking i wouldn't be able to make something in time, as work was killing me.
But I had to borrow work's netbook for the evening and I came up with a nice idea on the bus. :D
hehe... there's some classics in there this week.. :D
There are two mentions of coda for two songs instead of one coda for one song... is this an error? I'm confused at the moment...
>>4718
No, it means that there are two songs by coda.
Very well then, I'll accept it... ^_^
/me wonders who's going to point of the rule breaker
cough 1 mb limit cough
Er... I think the file you are talking about, vegetablemedley5.it, is uncompressed. A compressed IT file would probably be very close to that.
> Maximum entry size is 1 MB (1048576 bytes) or the total size in bytes of the raw data within the samplepack, whichever is larger.
Regardless of how it was saved, if it's over that size I think that means it's too big.
Though it seems that the only reason it's so big is because it's got duplicates of the samples instead of mapping the different instruments to the same samples. I dunno about anyone else, but I would let that one go.
To be honest, i don't really care, i was just Nitpicking..
But, pointing out the rules for those that didn't read them :)
Does anyone really care about that size limit? There was a song that was over the limit last time too and it wasn't disqualified.
Where does the flagrant rule bending end?
Adding 3 or 4 samples?
Using a completely different sample pack? :P
Like i said, i don't care. but someone might.
i'm not asking for the entry to be disqualified, i was just pointing out that it "broke the rules:
>(Note that sample packs are saved as compressed IT files; if you re-save as uncompressed IT, that's roughly the upper limit.)
Hey cush! Got some votes?
Also mandrasigma, but I don't think he watches this board/thread.
Results of this one might not be so pretty, which is a shame since the songs were good.
i voted....
but not with the right file.. :(
which you could've told me, i suppose.. :P
Aha! So that's where the unmarked votepack came from. Fixing results.
... I did tell you... now. :)
I don't usually look at the vote files until right before I calculate them, to help keep my own unbiased.
It wasn't just blank..
it was the 06 comp blank one. :D
I look forward to seeing if i've retained my least consistant title..
DAMN!.. MOST consistent...
My only comment is that I've have quite a bit of least consistents... more than anyone else has gotten.
Get any entries this week? Sorry if my pack drove people away :P
If you're extending it I'll make the effort to submit something.
I submitted one. I make sure to submit one for almost every compo (so far it's been all compos).
Blew it once again, sorry. Hope you get some others...
>>4749
I know. Blame school. Too bad, I'm really liking the tracks for this one, half of them I wouldn't even recognize as being from that pack.
Lemme know if/when you want another one.
>(samplepack submitted by +-, thanks!)
Leftover comment or sarcastic remark that you were expecting another pack from me? ;)
hahahaha, oops. I had the "results forthcoming" still there too.
(Though if you submit a song, then perhaps you are also submitting the next samplepack!)
well, so much for that. two whole entries this week, I'm done with this.
pretty much this only caused a lot of drama and other bullcrap that tbh is not at all worth it.
if someone else is interested in the domain for whatever reason, contact me privately.
I was one of the two that submitted a tune... wait... Storlek was the only one that submitted a tune, I presume?
Aww... bummer. Looks like Trippy Compo is gone. Back to the occasional OHC for me...
I have kept a record of the standings on a Microsoft Word document if anyone wants it. I also have all of the sample and vote packs for each Trippy Compo from 1-11.
Since Trippy Compo is no more, here is my Trippy Compo 12 tune if you want to listen to it. Enjoy! ^_^
ohc?
Back from the dead..
Are there any other tracker comps out there like TC?
I wouldn't mind the practice
The bad news is that I don't know of any other compos running at the moment, but there is someone called dust hill resident that is hosting a monthly MIDI compo over at VGMusic. I have utilized Schism Tracker to make MIDI tunes (It isn't bug-free, but I've actually made a few tunes despite these difficulties, without de-synching problems.) for that compo.
>>4846
Hi!
>>Are there any other tracker comps out there like TC?

By the way, trippy's back up. Kinda.
