Ok, yeah, it's kind of shared with a bunch of random stuff. But, if you compare with the old page it's still mostly the same – albeit with an autopackage rather than the [rather redundant] distro-specific packages.

We're mostly missing the old "roadmap", as most/all of Impulse Tracker's features have been implemented; the version history is gone because it was mostly redundant; and I believe everything else on the old page is on the wiki now.

As far as the forum goes: "user friendly" is fully subjective. Personally, I hated the old forum, and particularly having to constantly log in (which was only necessary in the first place because YaBB is a particularly ripe target for spambots, and its code wasn't very good so it was simply easier to disable anonymous comments than to code in a spamtrap). YaBB was only there because I was fiddling with the code and it kind of stuck as Schism's forum.

Nevertheless, you can certainly ask questions here, we're still around! :) I've also been meaning for a while now to switch the page style for /sc/ and /scdev/, because people do seem to have issues – technical or philosophical – with posting on a "4chan style" board. (Mind, these two boards have practically nothing to do with 4chan, and indeed, anyone trying to instigate raids or other such nonsense here will be forcefully removed if need be.)

Now I come back looking for news on the project and.. uh... where is everything? No real homepage, a wiki mostly devoted to comedy, links to changes/CVS updates that I can barely comprehend (probably because I'm not a programmer), and a barely comprehensible message board format. What happened? The old website DID get abducted by aliens and this is just a temporary placeholder, right? The whole thing looks like an in-joke which is not supposed to be intelligible to users, let alone to people who aren't pretending to be Japanese on teh interwebs. :(

I don't know if this is what you wanted. If not, let me know what you want and i'll be happy to post it. I'm using Mac os X on an intel cpu with 10.4.11. Schism worked fine a few versions ago.

I tried with a buffer size of 4096 and it's working way better now.

I also tried with schismtracker -a hw:0 but it couldn't find any suitable device (said "using no audio"). For now the pulse solution is fine, it's not like I'm doing any live act with schism or anything like that :)

Although you might have better luck using dmix or -a hw:0 with schism... pulse really quires a lot of latency...

I have been looking for this in mighty google but haven't managed to find anything regarding this. There are all sorts of command line options for configuring the video output (with schismtracker –help) but there's only the -a option for changing the audio driver.

My current output sounds very cracked, it's asking for an increase in the audio buffer but I don't have a clue about how to do such thing. It doesn't show in the preferences either, or there is a hidden preferences screen which I am not aware of.

I tried with the 27th september version, using ubuntu and pulseaudio. I wonder if it's possible to use Jack since it really improves audio output (for example it works WAY better with Jack than with Alsa when using Renoise).

Using a geforce 6600gt with the nvidia drivers, and the display rate in Schism is a bit sluggish when i use sdl, other two settings work fine.

Another small request, can .MOD note volumes be loaded in the volume column like it used to be, instead of "!xx" in the effect column? it sounds ok this way, but it's pretty confusing to try to read.

Maybe, some other letter that isn't a hex letter?

It said nothing about layouts when taking a quick look. I ran it with both however. No black screens. Nothing more. Going to ctrl-F1 and selecting yuv doesnt save anymore.

In the previous release: Fullscreening without params while using yuv resulted in schism being pushed into 2/5th of the size of my monitor. The upper part was used for display.

Schismtracker fullscreened while running –video-size=640x401 with either sdl or opengl. yuv on this causes damage to the eyes. it looks like you wearing too strong glasses

But the 640x401 has to be done. Without params it stretches to the whole screen. You remember this story i think. When I run it with 641x400, it also stretches to 640x480 but with a black canvas around it.

i've got it to enable, and i managed to get midines to beep at me, albeit only the once and without reproduction. It is sending midi ticks that i can see on my midi cable's leds, but only one set of note on commands.

I pick my MidiMan USB device, press spacebar, and it goes to Input. I press some keys, and I see them to the right.

Does schism put anything in the log window (C-F11)?

i used to use ztracker all the time, and have been trying to find a decent cross-platform substitute for midi control, schism seems to be the beef.

Additionally, schism now theoretically supports some RGB overlays which (if/when working) would mean no color/blurriness at all. Of course, I have no idea at this point if it works, if it doesn't who's fault it is (SDL, Xv, etc), but I committed the code anyway. Try it by running schismtracker with –video-yuvlayout=RGB or RGBA or whatever your xvinfo said you had. If you get anything but a black screen, I'd love to hear about it.

I've read the thread on file formats and well, my asbestos suit is still warm... Quite interestinf debate going on tho.

None yet; but I've played with psycle a bit, and I like some of the diverse ideas that are there. I don't want them to be DLL-like (or require plugins or shared objects per-se), but if we can hide a small+safe VM in schism, we might make it possible to have synthesizers written for the VM as "samples".

I'm really hesistent to muck up the IT format any further. Even more so for a "legacy" system like FM synthesis- perhaps we could do something like that and introduce a real generator system- the first generator is already here :)

By the way, there is a way that we could cobble adlib sample data into the IT format. Put 0x7F in the sample flags – that means that there's no sample, but the nonexistent sample is compressed, 16 bit, with pingpong loop and sustain loops. Then write the adlib data as if it were normal sample data, in the sample pointer block with its own 4-byte identifier. Other programs will summarily ignore it because it's not marked as being a sample, and the flag value is a good indicator to us because it's an otherwise highly unlikely value.

I guess adlib tracker 2 till provides more options for fm synthesis, am i wrong ? I used to sample sound from adlib tracker 2 to integrate those into my schism tracker compositions.

I had already tried the alt-z thingie but didn't fiddle enough with the params to get a sound out.

Bug #2: The pitch wheel for Channels 2 and up are sometimes set to 0000 instead of 2000 when music is stopped. Channel 1 is unaffected.

All of this MIDI stuff was tested with SimpleSynth using the SimpleSynth virtual input.

OK, I think the Bank Select stuff works. However, they change the bank for the channel next to it! I found this out when fiddling with the Bank Select stuff. Therefore, it is a bug.

Please fix this... I'd be glad to support this.

"By default" they're for quick save/restore, but thanks to the fact many ITEXE users also used Win95, many ITEXE users aren't aware of this.

Perhaps we can setup a flag that turns them into an unlimited undo stack...

Offhand I can say this would be a bit problematic as Ctrl-Z and Ctrl-Y are both already assigned keys, and I'd like to keep the "windows style keys" away from schism's interface (it makes it feel less 'pure' :)

You can lower usage in lots of ways: You can increase the audio buffer which increases delay and latency, but also lowers CPU.

You could also lower the priority of the schismtracker.exe process using start/belownormal or start/low

You could also try lazy redrawing which lowers the update-speed to about 2fps for non-critical stuff by editing your config file and adding lazy_redraw=1 to your [Video] section.

Please let us know what gives the best results and/or update the wiki.

It seems to be purely a Windows issue where schism constantly pegs the cpu usage; not to say it doesn't share with other apps just fine, but really causes a lot of unnecessary heat and battery usage. Other sdl apps don't seem to have this issue.

So long as you have a good Xv support- that is, a graphics card/driver that supports an overlay at least 1280x400 (as indicated by the maximum XvImage size in xvinfo) and your alsa driver doesn't require any emulation, then it's usually using around 3% when playing (at least on my system).

Your KORG or YAMAHA synth should be able to select on specific channels. If you're using VSTs, you might be able to use an extra level of indirection in the meantime.

If we add it to the instruments: you wouldn't be able to save it and would have to re-enter the bindings every time you load a module. That is, until a schism-tracker module format shows up...

However I agree we need to add latency to the midi devices and will work on adding that soon...

The problem that I have is with the synchronization midi and audio, since the audio of the Schism tracker has one small latency with regard to a device midi, because of it it of the latency.

We could add latency to each output (however) fairly easily. I don't presently save selected output configuration because I wasn't aware it was stable enough to do so, so we'd probably want to do that first. Are there any reports of the MIDI page freezing users?

But why do you want to select hardware connections per instrument? Is it just because there aren't enough midi channels?

Or are you trying to connect to "midi devices" that are too stupid to select the channels/programs they want (like VSTs)?

MIDI file export has improved somewhat with today's build. It's still got some issues, but it's producing some pretty good results so far.

MIDI output on Unix/OSS is probably never going to work unless you're running nice -19 or something.

MIDI output on Windows is another story...

yeah, unfortunately at least on my win32, even sending one midinote per row, the notes are not sent stably.. they are sent, but it is more like a shuffle gone awry, theres no way for me to place notes so that they are sent in an even way so that they continuously stay in rhythm.
hence why i cant use schism for anything:)
