When things un-break, perhaps a branch can be made for stable, and have changes that are "done" merged back into it.

Eh. Probably would be a good idea. I figured if you're interested in stable code you probably would be better off getting the stable packages. :) The builds are all tagged so it's still currently possible to pull from the source from a build (and then even patch against it and merge back to default). Just makes development a bit simpler, less merging etc... but I could see a reason to have it presented separately.
